About the Cooperative: COMSA

In 2000, 62 Honduran coffee farmers made a collective decision that would change their community forever. They came together to form COMSA (Café Orgánico Marcala, S.A.), united by a shared vision: transforming their farms from conventional to organic production.

By 2001, with support from the Funder Foundation, COMSA earned organic certification from Bio Latina—a milestone that opened doors to international markets and significantly better prices for their coffee. Five years later, in February 2006, they achieved Fair Trade certification, adding another layer of sustainability and equity to their model.

Impact Beyond the Cup

COMSA uses Fair Trade premiums to invest directly in their communities. Teacher salaries, school supplies, and infrastructure projects—these aren't abstract benefits; they're tangible improvements funded by every bag sold.

One of their most meaningful initiatives is supporting the Merienda Escolar program, which provides meals for school children. Fair Trade premiums help build school kitchens, ensuring that students have access to nutritious food that fuels both learning and growth.
